    Dutch 1991 Explorer

So, today the explorer had to go for its annual road safety inspection. All seemed to be well except a headlamp bulb that was broken aaannddd the rear brakes were not breaking equally enough. Seeing what I've already had to do to this vehicle, what needs to be done to this vehicle in the...

Overdrive band (A) and TCC Lockup

Hi All! I've been trying to diagnose what's going on inside my A4LD, but I'm running into some things. Right now, I'm doing about 3k RPM at 65MPH, and 3.2k RPM at 75 MPH. (3.55 rear diff, standard 235/75/15 tires) I am certain TCC does not lock up, due to the fact that if i tap the break...

FPGT24's 1998 Explorer XLT SOHC registry

For the love of god man, use some axle stands! I love the X, though. Looks very clean! Seems you have room to spare with the 31"s on :D

What size tool fits font spindle lock nut, 94 EB

For the manual hubs, I believe you need a Powerbuilt (648473) 4-lug -- 2 3/4 inch socket. But maybe someone else might want to chime in...

    Dutch 1991 Explorer

Well, I installed my trans-temp sensor today :D In order to create a separate hot in run circuit, I used interior fuse panel fuse #9 (blower motor), and routed a cable connecting to #9 s Brown/Orange wire to the relay's 86-terminal in the engine bay, and new 'hot in run' wires from...

    pulling steering wheel

Perhaps you can remove the column covers without pulling the steering wheel? I did so today on my '91 to get to the turn signal switch. Requires a bit of force/laying down the law on the covers, and tilting the wheel up for the bottom cover (do this one first) and down for the top cover.

    '92 v6 starting problems

Do the interior lights come on when you open the door? If so, have a look at your starter relay. Else, check the cables from the battery. They must be broken somewhere if you are certain the battery is charged. [edit] Also: Check this thread...

    Nook Color Tablet as Headunit

You could use the arduino to process raw data you receive from the computer(s) and pass this on in a presentable way to a small LCD screen, so you'd get some sort of trip computer but with your own data. OR you could pass this data on to your Nexus and use that to create a view of your data...

    Nook Color Tablet as Headunit

Since you're adding an arduino board, you could go all the way and add another LCD screen or feed the Nexus 7 with all kinds of stupid data about your vehicle :D

    Dutch 1991 Explorer

Had a chance to refresh the oil in the rear differential yesterday, replaced it with some Kroon GL-5 80W90 mineral oil. I wanted to put in some synthetic, but couldn't find any that was reasonably priced around here. Positioned a bucket underneath the diff, first I made sure the fillplug...

    Wheel Bearing Races

You tap them out from where they meet, in the middle of the rotor. So the inner race is tapped out from the outside, whilst the outer race is tapped out from the inside. If that makes any sense..

1996 XLT Rear Diff - Best Fluid

The 1st gen manual says 75w90 for an open and 75w140 for a limited slip differential. You can find the axle code on your door sticker. I'm curious to hear if it would be beneficial to use 75w140 on an open differential, anyone?

How stupid have you been? (speed)

What can I say, Germany is next door for me, and so are its highways :D Fastest I've been on US (Oregon state) roads should be around 100mph in a Pontiac G6 or something like that :)

What else could go wrong? Loud sound.

Sounds like a vacuum hose not being connected, but I could very well be wrong...

    Dutch 1991 Explorer

Well, got a bit of offroading done. Below is a clip from the start of the day, but after a while things went much smoother, had tons of fun! I was impressed with what a stock-height explorer can do!

    Grinding noise OHV

*bump* Today I found out that the noise is much worse when in D instead of OD. (I never use D, as I never tow, but it got in D today by mistake) When shifting from OD to D at ca. 65mph, RPM will increase (telling me my OD works, right?) but also grinding will start immediately. It will also...

unable to open rear doors from inside

The metal latch? I think that's unlikely. I could also open the door using the bent rod with my hand, but not the plastic handle...

unable to open rear doors from inside

Check if the rod bends while trying to open the door. Mine did. I strapped another, less bendable, piece of metal to the rod. Now it "works"-ish... Just don't use it too often ;)

    How to: R+R lower intake

Good writeup! You might as well replace the thermostat and its gasket while you have the coolant drained. Also have a look into the LIM and see if it's clean and doesn't contain any buildup, before you put it back on. Also, before putting the valve covers back on, check to see if there's any...

Wanted Need Affordable Source for Lifters

Don't forget your head bolts and gaskets. If you are going to replace the lifters, you'll need to pull the heads.. I replaced my lifters with some cheap ones from ebay, no complaints so far, but have less than 500mi on them...

    need Help.

Quite possibly the metal rods from the handle to the mechanism are bent. (See this post: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=378579#15 ) Another option is your child locks may be applied. There's a metal pin sticking out the side of the door, under the closing mechanism. The...

    Dutch 1991 Explorer

Updated the intro post :D Finally got around to fixing the left rear inner door handle. The plastic itself was just fine, but the metal rod leading to the mechanism was bend(ing). As I rarely have passengers, but being able to open the doors is mandatory by vehicle safety regulation and is...
