Safe to use both LCA 'ears' at same time?

I've heard mixed things about using the front crossmember. Some say they do it all the time without issue, others swear it's not designed to take force in that direction and that they've seen damage occur from it. To lift one wheel at the front I jack under the lower control arm (with some...

Safe to use both LCA 'ears' at same time?

Maybe a silly question but want to check. I've used the lower control arm jacking 'ears' one side at a time without issue plenty of times. I'm just about to replace rotors / bearings and it would be helpful to have both wheels lifted in case I need steer over for easier access to certain...

First front end rebuild - please hold my hand

Thanks! Will do - got some brake clean yesterday.

First front end rebuild - please hold my hand

Finally getting around to this... I decided to do the rotors / wheel bearings first so I'm not doing so much at once. Got a few questions re spindle nut + washer and also the condition of the rotors I received from Rock Auto. Does the direction of the spindle nut and washer matter? Both have...

First front end rebuild - please hold my hand

Cheers. I'll check with doorman customer support or rock auto about the lowers.

First front end rebuild - please hold my hand

So here is my final list: http://www.rockauto.com/xx/cart/?cartid=ff8057976c62d993d39fa7761be2fe68 Am I correct in thinking that I need two kits for the camber adjustment? One kit does one side, right? I went for Moog outer tie rods. I have heard about drops in quality, but I didn't want to...

First front end rebuild - please hold my hand

Out of interest what makes the camber adjustment kit necessary? Is it to do with going from the 2 part to 1 part UCA? Is the Mevotec 'supreme' kit in the daily driver section (blue boots + greasable) any good to your knowledge? That would come with inner tie rods. I'll take a look for video...

First front end rebuild - please hold my hand

I've decided after driving 50000 miles on a worn front end that it's time to tackle this. There aren't any drivability issues, steering is straight, responsive and tight, but I want to do it for safety's sake, and to put an end to the creaking and squeaking. I haven't done any suspension work...

Duralast vs Hitachi (OEM) IAC (finally solved high startup flare) + comparison pics

Hmmm on my engine the IAC gets it's air supply from a hose that connects to the main intake tube just after the MAF sensor. I'm not sure that any air from PCV venting can get into the IAC? Or can oil vapour rise up and get inside the IAC via the 'output' hole (the hole that air flows out of into...

Duralast vs Hitachi (OEM) IAC (finally solved high startup flare) + comparison pics

Thanks, I'll try that. So the electrical connector down and the valve holes up? As for oil, could I use a drop of 5W-30? I have a quart sitting open already...

Duralast vs Hitachi (OEM) IAC (finally solved high startup flare) + comparison pics

So something annoying has started happening with the new Hitachi IAC. The valve has been getting stuck in a slightly-too-open position, giving me a high idle around 2k / car pulls itself if in gear. Three times I have stopped, taken the valve out and used my pinky to nudge the cap back. This...

Solved Do GEM DTC codes persist through battery disconnect?

Thanks for the input. I believe the VSS sensor code was set when my alternator failed while driving (both tach and speedo stopped working). But I got the alternator and battery replaced 9000 miles ago and the tachometer, speedo and transmission have worked flawlessly since. The other GEM codes...

Solved Do GEM DTC codes persist through battery disconnect?

I just started using FORScan with a bluetooth adaptor. Previously I have only ever observed OBD codes relating to the CEL, using either a cheapo OBD scanner or the check service at auto parts stores. Usually in the process of troubleshooting, I'll use the battery disconnect method to clear the...

Need help with 'whizzing' sound tied to RPM (video)

I did wonder that. The start of the noise did coincide with me adding a bunch of Prestone generic PS fluid. I've since found out that this PS system really just wants Mercon / Mercon V. I've been gradually flushing the Prestone out using the turkey baster and re-adding method. Only thing is, the...

Duralast vs Hitachi (OEM) IAC (finally solved high startup flare) + comparison pics

Good luck, I have a feeling it will work out with the new part. One of the nice things is that I no longer grab the attention of everyone in the viciinity when starting my car in the supermarket parking lot... I do wonder if my engine, or at least the timing components, would be in better...

Duralast vs Hitachi (OEM) IAC (finally solved high startup flare) + comparison pics

The strange thing is, if you check out all the pictures closely on this listing for the Duralast one, you will see inconsistencies in the design of the part...

Duralast vs Hitachi (OEM) IAC (finally solved high startup flare) + comparison pics

Here are some extra pictures of mine if it helps. Different digits stamped on the outer edge, dunno what that means. I ended up using 'ABV0052' to hunt for mine, which I believe is the Hitachi part number? One other thing to notice is the way the little black cap is. On the 3rd party it always...

Need help with 'whizzing' sound tied to RPM (video)

Just in case - here it is again with the audio EQed so the sound is much more prominent over the engine noise: Cheers

Need help with 'whizzing' sound tied to RPM (video)

I'm trying to figure out what this 'whizzing' sound is. Wondering if anyone has ever heard anything like it? Best I can describe it's a kind of soft buzzing / whizzing tone, linked directly to engine speed. It's not exactly a whine, at least, I've watched 100 videos demonstrating different...

Ah, this thread. This thread is actually the reason I went back to looking at the IAC.

I'm curious to know what the Motorcraft one looks like - do you have pictures? Do you remember if it came in a Motorcraft box? Did it or does it say 'Made in Japan'?

Duralast vs Hitachi (OEM) IAC (finally solved high startup flare) + comparison pics

I can't speak for other brands of aftermarket IACs, but I would still suggest to anyone looking for a replacement to try finding a used OEM part from a seller online or even a scrapyard or pick and pull before going 3rd party.

    Transmission Longevity Tips

Interesting thread. Glad to see I've been doing most the listed tips here almost since getting the truck at 150000 miles. There are a couple of things I do to manage overdrive shifting (up into and down out of). I anticipate climbs that I know the car can't maintain in overdrive at 60/65 and...

Running heater causing vehicle to want to excellarate on its on.

Might be worth checking with her what climate control mode she was using. If using the windshield clear function it will run the compressor and that could at least exacerbate an issue relating to a vacuum leak or anything relating to an out-of-adjustment idle since the IAC will open more to keep...
