Finding a V8 Donor

Odd question, but I'm looking around at/for a donor V8 AWD truck to swap my Eddie Bauer, now I'm curious, outside of a 99-01 donor requirement due to the fuel system, what's the other things? Does trim matter? Decent price for a wreck? I mostly need some good pointers on this since it's a great concept to me and I love the truck but haven't undertaken this before.

I almost bought a whole running driving 98 for $600. leaked everything and half the tailgate was rusted away and the rockers were gone. I passed it up because of an iffy story on the transmission although he said it was rebuilt and I thought it shifted well. (and I really want a ranger)

I'm down south, that's my main issue I figured out, people don't like parting with V8s.

$600 (plus tax/fees) for a running, driving 2000 Eddie Bauer 5.0L AWD.
