- 2002 Ford Explorer XLS
Hello! Just picked up a 2002 Explorer 4.0 V6 4x4 XLS from an older relative. They claim the rear diff. needs rebuilding and they didn't want to bother selling, so gave it to me as a project / weekend vehicle. Haven't actually gotten under the thing yet but it appears to be stock.
This forum has already been so helpful and informative so a big thank you is in order.
Plan is to assess the rear differential situation first... so long as that isn't anything crazy the plan for the following year will be:
-I'd like to look into getting some beefier winter tires on it (New England).
-Still debating on lifting it or not.
-Would like to replace the wheels and the bumpers as the ones that come on the XLS aren't the prettiest. Considering going to a junk yard and grabbing wheels off of a higher-trimmed explorer there or getting aftermarket (choice here depends on whether or not I lift it... plan may be to get the biggest tires I can get on the stock suspension for $ reasons)
Open to suggestions/feedback on all above!
I can't wait to get started on my newest project.
