2005 Explorer XLS 2WD
Good afternoon everyone, nice to meet you all! I have in the past received some amazing help from my Mazda and Nissan forums and have generally been able to always get my issues fixed with the help of friendly folks like you!

So... I purchased my 2005 Explorer XLS 2wd flex fuel in August. Only issue at that time was that when shifting into drive, I would essentially have to put it in 3 and then move it back up to Drive. If you went directly to D, you would still be in neutral. No big deal, worked fine. Until 3 weeks ago. I took the family to the beach in the Florida panhandle , it drove fine going down from Atlanta, did fine down there, then, when we were about 50 miles from home all the sudden we lost cruise control but got home just fine. Fast forward a few days later and I took my special needs son to one of his specialists in Atlanta about 30 miles away. The transmission started doing a high rpm curve from 1st to 2nd gear, but it would go into 2nd if I let off the accelerator. There was a whining noise also that followed the engine speed. We got to the doctor and I called my wife and said I don't know if it is going to make it back home just in case we didn't make it. Going up the interstate towards home, the OD light started flashing, then the check transmission light came on, then I only had Neutral with revving then the transmission temperature light and engine failsafe mode light came on. I pulled off to the side of the interstate and sat for a few minutes, I started again and only had first gear. I was only about 2 miles from home at this point and got it home with the flashers on at a whopping 10 mph. It sat for about two weeks and I decided to read some forums and dive into it. I saw that trans temp was usually a sign of low tranny fluid. I removed the trans fill screw and had a quick thick stream of burnt metal smelling dark trans fluid pour out. It drained about 1 qt out and then I removed the larger bolt and drained an additional 3 qts. I added 6 qts and drained to proper flow rate and closed it up. I drove it around the town and it appeared better at first, Maybe just because it was cold at ambient temperature, but within 5-10 min, it was right back where it was once warmed up. I ran the codes with my scanner and got 10 codes, most are transmission related. P0720, P0722, P0732, P0733, P0734, P0735, P0775, P1000, P1700, P2106. Based on research I am considering the shift solenoid pack, filter and Output shaft speed sensor. Where should I start, Should I even bother or scrap it? I am not replacing a transmission on a $1500 vehicle. I am holding out hope, but am thinking this explorer is a lost cause. Prove me wrong! Thanks for any suggestions in advance!

Welcome to this forum! Did you check the wiring harness going into the transmission for damage? Maybe the insulation melted onto the exhaust pipe.
I have not, but I will look at that tomorrow. Thanks for the reply!
