I am doing a timing chain job on my '98 Explorer. Both the front and back cassettes went, however that is not my question. I purchased a DNJ Engine components timing chain kit and it has a part in it that I am not familiar with. It has a plastic rod that is 5 1/4 inches long, 1/4 inch in diameter with both ends tapered to 1/8 inch diameter. Can anyone tell me what this is and where it goes? If it helps, I have yet to take the old timing chains off of the motor yet, so it is not completely torn down.

volume reducer

That's the volume reducer. You carefully remove the galley plug near the front hydraulic tensioner and drop the reducer in the opening. You should have received a new galley plug with the kit. See my helpful threads "starting 00m12 kit installation".
