All,

Thanks for lending me your far superior expertise. I have an '02 Sport trac I purchased 3 years ago used. I've done a good bit of work on it to keep it going, and have driven the heck out of it. I live in Florida and it is getting hot and my A/C is getting quite questionable.

The breakdown:
1. 95% of the time when i start the car the A/C works great, super cold blows hard.
2. Somewhere randomly between 5-20 minutes the A/C stops removing humidity from the blowing air, and the air is no longer cold.
3. If I am driving far enough the A/C will begin to work properly again after a random 5-20 min time frame again.
4. I had the pressure in the system checked and it is reading on the high side of acceptable
5. Had the freon (or whatever we use these days) removed and replaced and no change in the behavior.
6. Changed the $20 relay just to confirm it is not the issue.

Any one have any points in the right direction, I hate to take it to a mechanic and have them rake me over the coals as A/C can be hugely expensive.

I enjoy doing my own work on my truck but under pressure A/C is not something I've messed with before.

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Matt V

Summary of work i have done before to give you an idea of comfort level in case you think i can fix on my own:
Installed A/C in Jeep wrangler
Replaced body mounts in 02 sport trac
replaced brakes, plugs, wires, instrument cluster, driver seat. in '02 sport trac.
replaced alternators, belts, and various other small stuff on cars my adult life.

clutch control switch? I think it's on the top of the compressor.... not certain though. I had that go out on my escort, and it had all the same symptoms that you described... and then it just stopped working.
